When the Healthcare Provider Becomes the Patient

As a Nurse Practitioner, I’ve spent years caring for others, helping patients navigate illnesses, injuries, and some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

But recently, while working and providing patient care, I experienced a traumatic dog attack that changed my life in an instant.

The injuries left me with fractures, significant pain, and physical limitations that suddenly interrupted the active lifestyle I love.

One moment, I was the healthcare provider. The next, I was the patient.

And although my medical background helps me understand the healing process, knowing what to expect medically doesn’t necessarily make the emotional side any easier.

I’ve had to learn to accept help, depend on others, and adjust to a body that simply cannot do everything it could before.

For someone who loves CrossFit, traveling, hiking, and staying active, that has been one of the hardest adjustments.

There have been moments of frustration, sadness, and uncertainty. But there have also been moments of gratitude, encouragement, and progress.

This experience has reminded me that healing isn’t just physical. It’s emotional, mental, and sometimes even spiritual.

And perhaps one of the most important lessons I’m learning is that being strong doesn’t always mean pushing harder.

Sometimes, strength means knowing when to slow down, allowing yourself time to heal, and trusting that progress will come.

Celebrating 25 Years of Love

In the middle of this challenging season, life also gave me something incredibly beautiful to celebrate.

My husband and I recently celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by renewing our vows at Niagara Falls in Canada, surrounded by the family we’ve built together and some of our dearest friends.

Twenty-five years of marriage represents so much more than an anniversary.

It represents love, faith, commitment, challenges, sacrifices, laughter, and the countless memories we’ve created along the way.

Standing there together was a reminder of how blessed I am and how much there is to be grateful for, even during difficult times.

Life isn’t always easy, and marriage certainly doesn’t come without challenges. But having someone beside you through both the highs and lows makes the journey even more meaningful.

And after everything I’ve experienced recently, celebrating that milestone meant even more.

Why Commit 2 Health Means So Much to Me

My passion for preventive healthcare and healthy aging has always been deeply personal.

I’m a wife, a mother of three, and a proud grandmother.

I want to continue exploring the world with my husband, creating memories with my children, and having the strength and energy to keep up with my grandchildren.

I want to hike mountains, travel to new places, remain independent, and enjoy all the little moments that make life special.

That’s why I believe so strongly in taking care of ourselves before health problems begin to limit what we can do.

But this experience has also reminded me that even when we do everything we can to stay healthy, unexpected challenges still happen.

And when they do, our commitment to health may need to look a little different.

A Different Kind of Strength

Right now, my commitment isn’t about setting personal records in the gym or reaching a new fitness goal.

It’s about healing.

It’s about nourishing my body, finding ways to move safely, protecting my mental well-being, and celebrating small improvements.

It’s also about learning patience—something that doesn’t always come naturally to me!

I’m realizing that strength isn’t measured only by physical ability.

Sometimes strength is accepting help, finding gratitude in difficult circumstances, and continuing to move forward even when progress feels slow.

Living the Commit 2 Health Lifestyle Together

As I begin sharing more of my personal journey through this blog, my hope is to show that living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean living a perfect life.

There will be accomplishments, celebrations, travels, family memories, and exciting new goals.

But there will also be setbacks, frustrations, and challenges.

And I want to share both.

Because that’s real life.

Whether you’re navigating menopause, struggling with weight management, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to find balance in a busy world, I hope you’ll remember that your health journey doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

Commit 2 Health isn’t just the name of my practice. It’s a commitment I make to myself every day, even when that commitment looks different than it did yesterday.

Here’s to celebrating the highs, learning through the lows, and continuing to build a life worth living.

With gratitude,

Holly Mulvey, APRN
