Holly and grandson - why future-focused health care is important to meI want to share with you why future-focused health care is so important. I became a grandmother in 2023. This title marked a significant moment in my life, providing me with an overwhelming sense of connection and purpose. The opportunity to create a bond and to love and nurture this little one became such a great gift. It is with this great blessing that I have such a strong desire to stay fit and healthy. Maintaining good health is one of my highest priorities so that I may age gracefully with an optimal health span to cherish the milestones of my grandson’s life.

As a primary care nurse practitioner for the last 10 years, I find that the majority of people aged 40-50 are on at least one medication. Two out of three are overweight with some sort of metabolic dysfunction, and almost all of them are confused about what steps to take. Proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits can be difficult to achieve when we are inundated with so much information. It is not a one-size-fits-all answer. We look to the latest quick fix or fad diet. When the results don’t come fast enough, we give up and accept the fate of these poor choices.

In my opinion, I feel that we are so accepting of just treating the symptoms with medication instead of trying to change the root cause. Taking the time to really educate and coach individuals to take control of their own care and work towards a healthier lifestyle, and preventing chronic disease, should be the objective.

Proactive Approach to Future-focused Health Care

Future-focused health care is a proactive approach to health that emphasizes prevention. It shifts away from the reactive symptom-based model, becoming more proactive to not just extend the lifespan but to improve the health span. Lifespan is defined as the length of time a person lives. Health span, on the other hand, is defined as the part of a person’s life during which they are generally in good health.

People are living longer in today’s time, but not necessarily healthier. People tend to be sicker in the last 10-15 years of their lives. What if we switched the focus and looked through a new lens? Working ahead of illness, prioritizing well-being over disease treatment.

Looking at the individual risks, genetics, environmental, and lifestyle data allows every individual to take an active role in their life to improve their health span.
